TO THE INTERESTED READER

You might be aware of accomplishments of the Indian mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan. Like Abel, Ramanujan, undaunted by hardships in his life, produced mathematics of the highest quality. Like Abel, Ramanujan died very young. Each year, for the past several years, I have contributed an article to The Hindu, India's National Newspaper, on Ramanujan's birthday, Dec 22 - an article that decribes the life and accomplishments of a great mathematician who can be connected naturally to Ramanujan. When the Norwegian Academy of Sciences announced the creation of the Abel Prize and the ICTP Ramanujan Prize, I wrote an article on Abel (and Ramanujan) which appeared in The Hindu in December 2004. This article was displayed at the Abel Prize website in March 2005 when the Abel Prize to Peter Lax was announced. To view the article see
